She doesn't look up when you sit down. She's been holding the same page for ten minutes, and she knows you noticed.

Mid-conversation

Someone you just met, someone you know, someone who knows you

Three characters, three ordinary evenings. The difference is how much they already have on you.

Elena Ruiz Barista at the café on Sixth · talks too fast when she's nervous Stranger

She looks up when the bell goes, and smiles like she's been waiting for a reason to.

Elena: Hi. You're new — I'd remember you.

You: First time here.

Elena: Then let me make you the good one, not the one on the menu.

You: I'll take your word for it.

She's already reaching for a cup.

Elena: Sit by the window. Best seat in here and nobody ever takes it.

No memories yet You met a minute ago. Everything she knows, you've told her today.

Elena has nothing to go on yet. The other two are picking up a thread you started days or months ago — and they're the ones who kept hold of it.

What you get

Four things you'll notice in the first week

  • Memory

They keep what you tell them

Mention your sister's wedding in April and it's still there in June — brought up unprompted, at the moment it matters. You can open the memory list any time and edit or delete what a character holds on to.

  • Authorship

    Or build someone from scratch

Name, role, temperament, history, and one honest flaw — the stubbornness or the pride that makes them worth arguing with. The flaw is required. Characters without one get boring by the third conversation.

  • Scenes

Written like a scene, not a reply

Narration in italics, dialogue on its own line. You see the pause before they answer, the glass set down a little too hard. It reads like a book you're in rather than a wall of text.

  • Time

    The distance closes slowly

A character you met last night talks to you differently than one you've known for four months. Eight named stages, and none of them can be skipped or bought.

Eight stages

Closeness is earned in one direction only

  1. Stranger
  2. Acquaintance
  3. Familiar
  4. Friend
  5. Close friendNadia is here
  6. Trusted
  7. Deep bond
  8. Unbreakable

Each stage changes what a character will volunteer, how they tease you, and what they'll admit to. The later ones are dim here for a reason — you haven't met them yet.
